Privacy Policy
Last updated 12 August 2026 · Applies to the Guernsey App on iOS and Android
The short version
The Guernsey App has no accounts, no sign-up and no adverts. There is no analytics package, no advertising SDK and no third-party tracker anywhere in it.
Almost everything you set — your parish, your bin address, your favourites, your layout — is stored only on your phone and is never sent anywhere.
The single exception is road-closure alerts. If you turn those on, the app sends a notification token and the routes you chose to our server, because that is the only way to alert you while the app is closed.
Who we are
The Guernsey App is an independent app made and maintained in Guernsey. For anything to do with this policy or your data, email cjhyman@gmail.com.
What stays on your phone
The app saves your settings and cached content in its own private storage on your device. This never leaves your phone, we cannot see it, and it is deleted when you uninstall the app. It includes:
- Your island (Guernsey or Alderney) and your bin collection address and schedule
- Your saved favourites in the shops and dining directory
- Your home screen layout — which tiles you've hidden and the order you put them in
- Your theme, language and bin reminder time settings
- A cached copy of recently loaded news, events, notices and directory listings, so the app still shows something useful when you have no signal
What the app sends to us
Road-closure alerts (only if you turn them on)
If you save a commute route on the Roads screen and allow notifications, the app sends our server two things: a push notification token issued by Apple or Google for your device, and the routes you saved. We store these so that when a closure lands on one of your routes we can send you a notification.
The token identifies your device to Apple's and Google's push services. It is not your name, your email or your phone number, and it is not linked to any account, because there are no accounts. We do not use it for anything except sending you road alerts.
This is the only information the app ever uploads. Every other screen simply downloads public island data.
Ordinary web requests
When the app fetches tides, flights, weather, news and so on, it makes a normal request to our server, which keeps standard technical logs including IP addresses. These logs are used to keep the service running and are not used to build any profile of you.
Permissions the app asks for
- Notifications — for bin day reminders and, if you set them up, road closure alerts. Bin reminders are scheduled entirely on your phone; nothing is sent to us for those.
- Calendar — only if you use the flight features. The app reads your calendar to spot flight bookings so it can track those flights for you, and it can add a flight or event to your calendar when you ask it to. Your calendar contents are read on your device and are never sent to us or to anyone else.
You can refuse or later withdraw either permission in your phone's settings. The rest of the app carries on working normally.
Things we do not do
- We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not collect your name, email address or phone number
- We do not track your location — the app has no location permission at all
- We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking software of any kind
- We do not sell, rent or share your information with anyone for marketing
Other services the app touches
- Apple and Google push services deliver notifications to your device.
- Google Maps displays the map on the Roads screen on Android. Google's own privacy policy applies to that map.
- Airtable hosts the form used to submit a community event. That form opens in your browser and anything you type into it is handled under Airtable's own terms. Submitting an event is entirely optional.
- News and information sources — tapping a headline or a listing opens that organisation's own website, where their privacy policy applies.
How long anything is kept
Settings and cached content live on your phone until you clear them or uninstall the app. Push tokens and saved routes are kept only while you have alerts switched on; tokens that Apple or Google report as no longer valid are discarded. Server logs are kept only as long as needed to run and troubleshoot the service.
Deleting your data
There is no account to delete. To remove everything:
- Delete your saved routes on the Roads screen, or turn off notifications for the app, to stop us holding a token and routes for your device
- Uninstall the app to erase everything held on your phone
- Or email cjhyman@gmail.com and ask us to remove any data associated with your device, and we will
Children
The app is a general-audience island information app. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Your rights
The app is operated from Guernsey and we handle any personal data in line with the Data Protection (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 2017. Because we hold so little, and none of it identifies you by name, we may not be able to link data to you individually — but you are welcome to contact us with any request or question about how your information is handled.
Changes to this policy
If the app starts doing something materially different with data, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change. Significant changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
